BackgroundOperation Giving Back was developed in response to the American College of Surgeons' Board of Governors Committee on Socioeconomic Issues and their interest in the subject of volunteerism. This committee, under the leadership of Andrew L. Warshaw, MD, FACS, and Robert V. Stephens, MD, FACS, encouraged the College to more closely examine the extent of volunteer involvement and interest among ACS members. Their findings demonstrated great breadth and depth of engagement, and that in fact, many surgeons considered volunteering an integral component of their professional identity. The complete study was conducted over the three-year time period from 2001-2003. A summary of Phase III is available here:
In response to the interest of the College membership in volunteerism and with the input of active and potential surgical volunteers, the ACS has created Operation Giving Back. It is intended to be a comprehensive resource center where surgeons can find the information they need to investigate and participate in volunteer opportunities. Your input and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged. Our goal is that OGB will come to serve as a source of inspiration and education for all parties interested in surgical volunteerism: volunteer agencies and the philanthropic individuals and organizations that support them, policy makers, and the public. |
